We are thrilled to announce the official kickoff of our PWSSD Reads initiative for the 2025-2026 school year! This March, our entire elementary community, including students, families, teachers, and staff from Dunwiddie, Lincoln, and Saukville Elementary, is embarking on a shared literary journey.
This year, we are diving into the world of Fenway, an energetic and loyal Jack Russell Terrier, and his "short human," Hattie.
Told entirely from Fenway’s hilarious and often confused perspective, this charming story follows the duo as they move to a new home. Through Fenway’s eyes, we learn about the challenges of change, the power of loyalty, and the importance of seeing the world from someone else’s point of view. It’s a perfect tale to spark conversations about empathy, friendship, and perspective-taking.
What is PWSSD Reads?
The "PWSSD" model is simple but powerful:
Everyone Reads: Every elementary family receives a copy of the same book.
Shared Schedule: We follow a reading calendar so we are all on the same chapter at the same time.
Community Connection: Whether you’re reading on the couch at home, discussing a chapter in the classroom, or watching a "Guest Reader" video, we are all connected through the same story.
How to Get Involved
We want this to be a true community event! Here is how you can join the fun:
Follow the Schedule: Check your student’s folder or visit our official ODOB page for the reading calendar.
Watch Guest Readers: We have a lineup of special community members and district staff (including Superintendent McMahon!) reading chapters aloud. You can find these videos on our website and social media.
Join the Discussion: Each chapter comes with a "Focus Question" and a Kahoot quiz to test your knowledge. Ask your student: “Why does Fenway think the boxes are taking their things?” or “What makes a ‘good friend’ according to Hattie?”
Share the Experience: Use the hashtag #PWSSDReads on social media to share photos of your family reading together or to tell us your favorite Fenway moments!
Why We Do It
Reading together builds more than just literacy skills; it builds a sense of belonging. When an entire district reads the same book, we create a shared language and a common experience that transcends the classroom walls.
So, grab your copy of Fenway and Hattie, find a cozy spot, and let’s start reading, Port Washington-Saukville!
