This March, our three Port Washington–Saukville School District elementary schools will come together for PWSSD Reads, a shared reading experience for students, families, and staff. Our entire elementary community will be reading the same book: Fenway and Hattie by Victoria J. Coe. That’s right—everyone!
Parents, students, teachers, and staff will read and discuss the book together, chapter by chapter—with community members serving as guest readers for each chapter. Whether it’s in the classroom, at school, or at home on the couch, we’ll all be following along as one connected elementary community.
About the Book
Fenway and Hattie is a charming story about a dog and his humans—and the understandings and misunderstandings that come with learning to see the world from someone else’s perspective. Told from the point of view of Fenway, an energetic and passionate Jack Russell terrier, the story centers on his deep bond with his favorite “short human,” Hattie.
Fenway takes his role as protector very seriously, keeping watch for suspicious squirrels, noisy delivery trucks, and any other potential threats. While his humans don’t always understand his concerns, Fenway remains loyal, persistent, and determined to help his family. As the story unfolds, Fenway and Hattie both learn to better understand one another, showing readers the importance of empathy, friendship, and perspective-taking in a fun and relatable way.
Please use this webpage and the reading calendar to follow along and read the corresponding chapters with your child each night. Some chapters are short, while others are a bit longer, but staying on schedule will allow our entire elementary community to react, reflect, and enjoy the story together.
Happy reading!
